Thousands of artisans (blacksmiths, stonemasons, and jewelers) were forcibly relocated to Timur's capital. For the conqueror, this was a tactic: break resistance, scorch the earth, and take away everything of value. For the peoples of the Caucasus, this became a tragedy: along with the people, traditions and the memory of entire generations disappeared.

Wave After Wave: New Invasions

Timur's campaigns did not end. Over two decades, he made up to eight major invasions of the Caucasus. Each of them became a new wave of destruction. His goal was not simply to punish, but to destroy the very basis of existence of the local peoples.

In the 1390s, his troops returned to the South Caucasus again and again. Especially heavy blows fell upon Georgia during the reign of King George VII, son of Bagrat V.
