The cultural center of the city. The state drama theatre is located on the square.
Theater Square is situated in the very heart of Batumi, near the renowned boulevard, and stands as one of the most beautiful and popular spots in the resort city. The undeniable crown jewel and hallmark of the square is the Neptune Fountain. At the fountain's center rises the statue of the ancient sea god, surrounded by bronze mermaids from whose breasts water spouts cascade, and cherubs representing the world's great rivers: the Nile, Ganges, Amazon, and Danube. It is an exact replica of the famed fountain in Bologna, Italy.
The square received its official name from the Batumi Ilia Chavchavadze State Drama Theatre. The theater was built in 1952 in the Stalinist Empire style, with a classical portico of eight columns. Its entrance is adorned by small golden lions, enlarged replicas of artifacts found in the Tsromi burial mounds.
The square itself, compact and inviting, attracts plenty of tourists by day and gathers locals in the evenings. Benches are installed for resting, while neatly sculpted green shrubs form an elegant maze. Contemporary buildings surround the square, including the Radisson Blu hotel.
