Batumi Ilia Chavchavadze Museum

A stone mansion-museum on Griboedov Street housing personal belongings, photographs, and archives of the great 19th-century Georgian writer and public figure, the initiator of national revival.

In the historic part of Batumi, at 5 Griboedov Street, stands the memorial museum dedicated to the life and work of Ilia Chavchavadze (1837–1907), a key figure in Georgian history. Ilia Chavchavadze, rightfully called the "Father of the Nation," was an outstanding writer, poet, publicist, and public figure who led Georgia's national liberation movement in the second half of the 19th century. The museum was established in 2001 in the building where the great educator stayed during his visits to the city. In 2021, the museum underwent full restoration and reopened to visitors in updated form, becoming a modern cultural venue.

The permanent exhibition hall offers guests a focused and personal view of the era through authentic artifacts. The museum collection numbers around 278 exhibits, primarily consisting of personal belongings of Ilia Chavchavadze himself. The exhibition is unique in that it also presents items that belonged to his contemporaries, friends, and associates. In particular, personal items of his close friend, the renowned physician and writer Grigol Volsky, are kept here.

Such a combination of exhibits provides a rare glimpse not only into the personality of Ilia Chavchavadze himself, but also into his circle: the intellectual elite of Georgia at the time. Thanks to its intimate scale, the museum offers not a broad panoramic survey, but rather a concentrated immersion in history through authentic, personal artifacts.

A visit to this museum will be an essential stop for anyone interested in Georgian history and literature and who appreciates memorial sites preserving the spirit of their time. Before visiting, it is recommended to verify the current opening hours, as they may vary.
