Konstantine Leselidze Garden Square is a compact historic oasis in central Old Tbilisi, situated at the intersection of bustling Kote Abkhazi St and Vertskhli St (Silver Street). The square is a small open area whose sole and primary landmark is the monument erected here in 1947. This spot serves as an important orientation point for walking itineraries winding through the old quarters of the city.
The central place in the square is occupied by the bust of Konstantine Leselidze, a distinguished military commander and hero of the Second World War. A native of Georgia, Colonel General Leselidze gained fame as a gifted commander who took part in crucial operations defending the Caucasus. The monument is sculpted from marble by celebrated Georgian sculptor Iakob Nikoladze, whose works are recognized as classics of national art.
Despite modest dimensions and lack of extensive park amenities, the public garden plays a vital role in Tbilisi’s topography. Until 2006, the street where it is situated also bore the name of General Leselidze, and although it has now been renamed in honor of Kote Abkhazi, the square officially retains its historical name. This is one of few spots in the tourist center where military history of the mid-20th century intersects with contemporary city life.
