A historic district of Batumi with 19th-century European architecture, narrow streets, wrought-iron balconies, and the atmosphere of an old port town.
Dzveli Batumi, or Old Batumi, is the city's historic district located near the sea and Batumi Boulevard. This quarter began to be actively developed at the end of the 19th century during the porto-franco era, when Batumi was rapidly turning into a major trading port on the Black Sea coast. Unlike old oriental cities with chaotic streets, the blocks here feature a clear European layout with straight streets and dense historic buildings.
Old Batumi is famed for its architecture in Eclectic, Art Nouveau, and Neoclassical styles. Buildings here retain carved wooden balconies, ornate wrought-iron railings, soaring windows, and facades fashioned from red brick and pale stone. Over various eras, these quarters housed the mansions of wealthy merchants, foreign enterprises, and oil industrialists, with the town's expansion intrinsically linked to the seaport and the oil pipeline from Baku.
Today Dzveli Batumi remains one of the city's most atmospheric districts. Quiet courtyards, coffee shops, small hotels, and residential homes hide behind historic facades, while narrow streets gradually lead down to the sea and the old port. The area has preserved the ambiance of old seaside Batumi and is considered one of the city's primary walking areas.
