An authentic fragment of the Berlin Wall installed in Tbilisi in 2017, preserving traces of both European and Georgian history.
The Berlin Wall fragment on Europe Square is one of Tbilisi's most unusual monuments. Germany presented this authentic concrete slab to Georgia in 2017. It was dedicated on November 9, the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today the memorial commemorates the events that ended the division of Germany and became an enduring symbol of the conclusion of the Cold War.
The Berlin Wall divided the city from 1961 to 1989. After its demolition, individual sections were preserved as historical monuments and sent to various countries around the world. The Tbilisi fragment has retained its original concrete surface with chips, cracks, and marks of time. In some areas, traces of the old graffiti that once covered the western side of the wall can still be seen.
Over the years spent in Tbilisi, the monument acquired its own history as well. In 2021, Georgian musician Gia Gachechiladze, known under the pseudonym Utsnobi, painted the phrase "God is love" in red paint on the wall during a political protest. The inscription quickly caught the attention of city residents and the media. Thus, the fragment of the Berlin Wall became not only a reminder of the past, but also an active participant in contemporary events.
