Vorontsov Palace

A historic 19th-century residence where the independence of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan was proclaimed in 1918.

Vorontsov Palace is one of the most important historic residences in Tbilisi from the 19th century. The building acquired its current appearance in the second half of the 19th century and is associated with the name of the Caucasian viceroy Mikhail Vorontsov. It was under him that the palace became the center of the city's secular life, hosting balls, official receptions, and meetings of the Tiflis nobility. Today it is one of the oldest surviving public buildings on Rustaveli Avenue.

In the history of the palace, there was room not only for social life, but also for crucial political events: in 1918, it was in this very hall that the independence of Georgia, as well as the independence of neighboring Armenia and Azerbaijan, was proclaimed. Later, in 1921, the first constitution of the Democratic Republic of Georgia was adopted here.

Today the Vorontsov Palace is open to visitors and operates as a museum and cultural center. Following an extensive restoration, visitors can admire preserved historic 19th-century interiors: the Marble and Mirror halls, the study of Mikhail Vorontsov, and the boudoir of his wife Elizaveta Branitskaya. From the boudoir, there is an exit to the famous balcony with a staircase, where one of the scenes of the iconic Georgian film "Keto and Kote" was filmed. The palace halls display historic photographs, interior items, and tableware from the second half of the 19th century, crafted after sketches by Vorontsov himself. From the windows and balcony, a view opens onto the First Republic Park, which today occupies the grounds of the former palace garden.
