Vardzia Cave City

Majestic 12th-century cave monastery in the cliffs of southern Georgia: over 600 rooms, tunnels, frescoes, and churches carved into the sheer cliff on the bank of the Kura River.

Vardzia is one of the most impressive and significant historical monuments of Georgia, representing a monumental cave city-monastery. Carved into the sheer cliff of Mount Erusheti in the picturesque Kura River valley, this complex is an outstanding masterpiece of Golden Age Georgian architecture. Construction began in the 12th century under King George III and was completed during the reign of his daughter, legendary Queen Tamar. Vardzia was created not merely as a monastery, but as a formidable border fortress capable of sheltering thousands of people during hostile invasions.

Originally, the city was completely hidden within the rock. It comprised up to 13 levels connected by a complex system of tunnels and included about 3000 rooms: residential cells, refectories, libraries, pharmacies, and 28 wine cellars with kvevri buried in the floor. However, in 1283 a massive earthquake occurred, as a result of which a gigantic layer of rock split off from the mountain. This catastrophe exposed the city’s internal chambers and tunnels, destroying about two thirds of the complex and stripping it of its original defensive purpose.

The spiritual and architectural heart of Vardzia is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Inside, a unique ensemble of 12th-century frescoes is preserved, including one of the few surviving lifetime portraits of Queen Tamar and her father George III. Today, visitors can walk through tangled tunnels and peer into ancient monastic cells and refectories, imagining how life bustled in this rock-hewn metropolis over 800 years ago.

To visit this unique museum-reserve located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, purchasing an admission ticket is required. The complex is open to tourists daily, usually from 10:00 to 19:00 during the summer season. Visitors are strongly advised to wear comfortable, sturdy, non-slip footwear, as there is plenty of walking on uneven stone paths and steps. You should set aside at least one and a half to two hours for a thorough tour. It is important to remember that even today a small monastic community lives in Vardzia, so one should treat this place with respect.
