One of the oldest zoos in the Caucasus (founded in 1927): over 200 animal species, a petting area, an exotarium, educational programs, and playgrounds for children.
Tbilisi Zoo, founded in 1927, is the oldest and largest zoological park in Georgia. Located in the heart of the capital, in the gorge of the Vere River near Heroes Square, it has served for nearly a century as a cherished recreational haven for generations of Tbilisi residents and visitors. Its collection has traditionally encompassed hundreds of animal species from across the globe.
The modern history of the zoo is inextricably linked to the tragic event of the night of June 14, 2015. A sudden and catastrophic flash flood along the Vere River almost completely annihilated the lower section of the park. The disaster claimed the lives of numerous animals and demolished enclosures, resulting in several predators escaping into city streets. This tragedy captured global attention and highlighted the vulnerability of the zoo's location.
Despite heavy losses, the zoo was partially restored and continued its operations. Today, visitors can see elephants, white rhinos, hippos, lions, white tigers, bears, assorted primates, and birds here. An exotarium featuring reptiles, amphibians, and fish also functions on the grounds. The zoo actively pursues educational activities, holding events for children and schoolchildren.
For visitors, the zoo is open daily, usually from 10:00 am. Closing time depends on the season: in summer it operates longer, in winter, shorter. The admission ticket price is one of the most affordable in the city. It is important to know that following the 2015 tragedy, a decision was made to build a new, more modern and safer zoo on an extensive territory near the Tbilisi Sea. Currently, the old zoo is in a transition period, preparing for its future relocation.
