The Bridge of Peace is a pedestrian bridge made of glass and steel, famed for its undulating canopy and interactive illumination that broadcasts a message of human unity using Morse code.
The pedestrian bridge across the Mtkvari River is one of the most recognizable symbols of modern Tbilisi, connecting the historic part of the city with Rike Park. The glass-and-steel structure designed by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi resembles a drawn bow or a giant marine animal hovering over the water. Thanks to transparent panels, a stroll across the bridge turns into a sightseeing tour, offering direct views of Narikala Fortress, Metekhi Church, and the Presidential Palace.
The main feature of the site is its intelligent lighting system designed by French designer Philippe Martineaux. Exactly 90 minutes before sunset, thousands of LEDs light up on the bridge, transmitting messages in Morse code. The installation broadcasts the names of the chemical elements that make up the human body, emphasizing the idea of unity among all people regardless of nationality or beliefs.
The Bridge of Peace is not only an important pedestrian artery, but also a popular public gathering space. It is always bustling here: street musicians create a festive mood, while tourists and locals gather to watch the sunset. This is a place where ultramodern high-tech aesthetics meet the ancient landscape, producing the unique architectural contrast characteristic of today’s capital.
