Academy of Sciences building with a cinema, concert hall, and cable car station.
Georgian Academy of Sciences is located in the center of Tbilisi, next to Rustaveli Avenue. Today scientific and administrative organizations operate in the building, along with cultural spaces: here are the Georgian Filmmakers' Union, the "Dom Kino" cinema, and the Mono Hall concert venue. The lower station of the cable car to Mount Mtatsminda is located in the courtyard.
The main feature of the complex is a tall corner tower, which was long one of the city's architectural landmarks and is clearly visible from various districts of Tbilisi. The building remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the center.
The complex was built in 1946–1953 according to the design of architects Mikheil Chkhikvadze and Konstantine Chkheidze. Originally, it was intended for the "Gruzugol" coal enterprise, but after construction was completed, it was transferred to the Academy of Sciences and became the principal scientific center of the republic.
