A modern pedestrian avenue that serves both as a memorial honoring fallen soldiers and a lively hub of contemporary life, home to the futuristic Public Service Hall and renowned singing fountains.
The Alley of Heroes in Batumi is not just a street, but one of the most grandiose and significant avenues, symbolizing the new life and architectural ambitions of the city. Stretching from the central districts to the coast, the alley connects the historic part of Batumi with modern quarters and serves as a key place where the past meets the present. After a large-scale reconstruction completed in 2024, it turned into a modern public space with wide pedestrian zones, bridges, and art objects.
The alley's primary and deepest meaning is rooted in its name. First and foremost, it is named after Zhiuli Shartava, a Georgian politician posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Georgia. A monument to him is erected at the very start of the pedestrian zone. However, in a broader sense, the entire alley is dedicated to the memory of Georgian soldiers who fell in battles for the country's territorial integrity. In its center stands a memorial in the form of a tall stele, which serves as an enduring reminder of their valor and acts as a venue for official ceremonies.
The Alley of Heroes is a veritable showcase of modern architecture. The most recognizable site along the alley is the Adjarabet Arena stadium, designed by the Turkish firm Bahadir Kul Architects and seating 20,000 spectators. Its facade is inspired by the dynamism of the traditional Georgian Khorumi dance. Nearby rise the futuristic Dar Tower skyscrapers and Orbi aparthotels, creating an impressive Dubai-style urban skyline.
With the onset of darkness, Alley of Heroes transforms into one of the city's key gathering hubs thanks to the musical fountain complex on Lake Ardagani. Every evening, usually from 21:00 until midnight, a vibrant show plays out where powerful water jets "dance" to music ranging from classical to modern hits, changing color under spotlight beams. The performance is occasionally enhanced with a laser show. This free spectacle draws hundreds of viewers gathered on steps and benches around the lake.
The alley has a very convenient location. It can be reached from the Old Town on foot in about 30 minutes, by numerous city buses, or by taxi. The large Black Sea Mall shopping center is located nearby. The alley is a key point connecting Old and New Batumi, and a must-visit for anyone who wants to feel the rhythm of a modern Georgian resort.
