Batumi Aquarium

A cozy exhibition facility showcasing nearly 100 species of Black Sea fish, freshwater species, and exotics, a splendid destination for families and marine life enthusiasts.

Batumi Aquarium, officially named the Batumi Demonstration Aquarium, was opened on August 20, 1966. It was initially established on the basis of the Georgian branch of the Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography. Until 1998, the aquarium belonged to this institute, and then until 2011 it was part of Batumi 6 May Park. From January 1, 2011, it became one of the departments of the Flora and Fauna Research Center of the Black Sea.

Today the aquarium showcases around 100 fish species. You will see Black Sea dwellers, freshwater fish from Georgian waters, and ornamental fish. Among the Black Sea inhabitants, one can encounter the common stingray, thornback ray, common sole, mullet, long-snouted seahorse, red mullet, and croaker. Among exotic species, particularly interesting are Amazonian piranhas, cichlids, as well as fish from Southeast Asia: gouramis, barbs, clown loaches, red-tailed black sharks, and beautiful discus fish. Batumi Aquarium is not merely an exhibition space, but a complex facility consisting of demonstration and experimental sections. The total water capacity of the aquariums is about 200 000 liters. Thanks to an ingeniously designed system, water circulates continuously here, temperature is regulated, and aeration is provided. Specialized filters create a closed-loop system, maintaining biological balance, which allows most fish to be bred right here. It is noteworthy that successful fish reproduction is only possible by providing conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat.

Batumi Aquarium is located in the very heart of the city, right on Batumi Boulevard, not far from the Dolphinarium. It is one of Batumi's oldest attractions, allowing visitors to encounter a rich underwater world. The aquarium is typically open from 10:00 to 17:30 daily (break 13:30-14:30). The adult admission ticket costs 4 Georgian GEL, while children under 6 enter free. Visiting the aquarium is a wonderful way for the whole family to spend time, learn more about marine life, and enjoy the beauty of the underwater realm.
