A medieval monastery complex dating from the 11th-13th centuries, established by King David IV the Builder in 1106. It housed one of Georgia's premier educational and cultural hubs: the Gelati Academy, as well as the royal pantheon of Georgian monarchs.
Gelati Monastery, located in Imereti near Kutaisi, is one of Georgia's most important cultural and religious centers. It was founded in 1106 by order of King David IV the Builder, who wanted to create not just a monastery, but the largest spiritual and educational center of his time. The monastery became a symbol of Georgia's Golden Age and the burial place of King David IV himself, who is considered one of the greatest rulers in the country's history.
The complex includes several churches, among which the central place is occupied by the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The churches of Saint George and Saint Nicholas are also located here. A distinguishing feature of the monastery is its splendid mosaics and frescoes, considered among the finest examples of medieval Georgian art. Gelati had its own academy, which was one of the prime centers of learning in medieval Georgia.
In 1994, Gelati Monastery was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, confirming its exceptional historical and cultural value. It continues to draw pilgrims and tourists from all over the world, inviting them to touch history, enjoy unique architecture and art, and experience the spiritual atmosphere of this great sanctuary.
