Large outdoor chess area where you can play a game with nearly human-sized pieces among the alleys of Batumi Boulevard.
Giant Chessboard on Batumi Boulevard is one of the park's most unusual interactive grounds. A large chess field tiled in black and white is situated right among the open-air alleys. Here anyone can play a game with pieces nearly half human height; the area is completely open and has long become a popular meeting and leisure spot.
Chess holds a special place in Georgian culture, and the country is known for one of the strongest chess schools in the world. In Georgia, this game has always been considered a symbol of intellect and good education, and in the past, chess sets were even part of a bride's dowry. The giant chess area on the boulevard appeared in 2010 during the large-scale renovation of the promenade and quickly turned into one of the liveliest walking spots.
The large pieces are crafted from durable material resistant to the seaside climate, and weighted inside with sand or water for stability. During the day, players and spectators frequently gather here, watching matches right amidst palms and sea breezes. In the evening, the boulevard’s illumination makes the chess area particularly striking, creating the ambiance of an authentic open-air city club.
