Gvara Fortress

Gvara Fortress is one of the oldest and most mysterious fortresses of Adjara, located in Machakhela National Park on a high hill at the confluence of the Chorokhi and Machakhela rivers, approximately 20 kilometers from Batumi. This site was not chosen by chance: from here, a panoramic view opens up over valleys, mountains, and all nearby gorges, allowing the fortress to control important trade and military routes of the region.

The first fortifications appeared here in the 5th–6th centuries, with construction and reconstructions continuing until the 18th century. Gvara long served as a crucial strategic site protecting the region from invasions and monitoring routes through the gorges. The fortress was also used as a prison and watchtower. Surviving inside are wall fragments up to 3-6 meters high, remnants of buildings, a well, and ancient stone structures, all conveying the atmosphere of military life in past centuries.

Today Gvara Fortress consists of ruined yet still majestic walls surrounded by dense greenery and sheer precipices. The area of the fortress is around 150 sq. meters, and to reach it, one must navigate about 300 steps down along the trail. Despite its partial ruin, the site preserves a special energy and mystery, while the views from the hill captivate even the most seasoned travelers.
