One of the most significant and impregnable fortresses of Adjara, constructed in the 12th–13th centuries atop a mountain at an elevation of 2635 meters.
Khikhani Fortress is one of the most impressive and ancient mountain strongholds of Adjara, located on a mountaintop in Khulo Municipality, approximately 125 kilometers from Batumi. It rises at an elevation of over 2200 meters above sea level, which provided it with extraordinary strategic importance and rendered it practically impregnable. On three sides, the fortress is protected by sheer cliffs, and access is possible only via a narrow path from the southeast side; the trail to the ruins traverses a steep mountain path with stairs and observation viewpoints that open up breathtaking vistas of the gorges and the Shavsheti Ridge.
Built in the 10th–13th centuries, Khikhani Fortress long served as the main residence of the influential Abuseridze family and was the regional defense hub. Inside the fortress, archaeologists discovered remnants of four towers, residential structures, the Church of St. George, wine cellars, and a well. The complex covered an area of about one hectare and comprised both defensive and utility structures. In the 13th century, the famous Georgian scholar and astronomer Tbel Abuseridze worked here. The fortress repeatedly became the arena for historical events and battles: in 1815, Selim Khimshiashvili, a fighter for the independence of Adjara, defended here against the Ottoman army.
Numerous legends are associated with Khikhani Fortress, including subterranean passages leading to neighboring villages and monasteries, as well as Queen Tamar, who is credited with building or expanding the fortress. Even though only ruins have survived to our time, the ancient atmosphere, breathtaking views, and unique history make Khikhani a must-visit for adventure seekers, history enthusiasts, and mountain hikers. This is a place where you can feel the spirit of medieval Adjara and enjoy solitude amid mountain peaks and clouds.
