A carved wooden mosque standing in the center of the village of Kvirike, an example of colorful Laz architecture and cultural heritage of Adjara.
Kvirike Mosque is one of the oldest active mosques in Adjara and an important monument of Georgia’s national cultural heritage. It is located in the center of Kvirike village, in Kobuleti Municipality. The mosque was built between 1860 and 1866 by a Laz master craftsman from Arhavi, when the region was under Ottoman rule.
This is a wooden building on a stone foundation, distinguished by the absence of a dome. Instead, there is a beautiful recess with a carved medallion on the ceiling. The mosque is richly decorated with wood carvings: you can see them on the mihrab, minbar, columns, balcony, and doors. Ornaments in the form of lilies and braided patterns give the mosque a special charm.
During the Soviet period, the mosque was closed and used as a grain storehouse. In the 1990s, services were resumed. Today, the mosque continues to function as a religious center, especially on Fridays and holidays. It preserves a connection with the region's culture and history, serving as a vivid example of colorful Laz architecture and Adjara's cultural heritage.
