Bronze monument to the creator of Batumi Boulevard, beside which one can sit among the park's green alleys.
The Monument to Michael D’Alphonse is dedicated to the man considered the creator of Batumi Boulevard and the chief gardener of the city in the late 19th century. The bronze sculpture portrays D’Alphonse sitting on a chair in a classical suit, with another empty chair placed beside him where passersby can sit down. The monument stands amid the green alleys of the boulevard and has long been a popular spot for photos.
It was Michel D’Alphonse who was involved in the landscaping of this part of the coast and transformed the seaside territory into a large subtropical park. Thanks to him, palms, magnolias, cypresses, and many exotic plants appeared on the boulevard, becoming symbols of Batumi. The sculpture was installed in 2012 and was executed without a high pedestal to create a sense of the living presence of the man amid the park he created.
Today tourists and locals often relax near the monument, and the bronze chairs have become noticeably polished from thousands of photographs. The sculpture fits harmoniously into the ambiance of the old boulevard and serves as a reminder of the man thanks to whom Batumi gained its famous seaside green park.
