An ancient 12th-century arched bridge, built without pillars or railings from local stone by order of Queen Tamar.
Makhuntseti Bridge is one of the most famous and well-preserved medieval arched bridges in Adjara, situated about 30 kilometers from Batumi, next to the waterfall of the same name and Makhuntseti village. Built in the 11th–12th centuries, it serves as a vivid exemplar of Georgian stonework architecture: the bridge is constructed from large boulders and limestone, while its elegant arch fits harmoniously into the picturesque mountain landscape.
The length of the bridge is about 28 meters, width: slightly more than two meters, and the height above the Acharistskali River reaches 6 meters. Over the centuries, Makhuntseti Bridge has retained its strength and is still used for pedestrian crossing. It opens beautiful views of the river, green hills, and surrounding villages, and nearby one can often hear the roar of the famous Makhuntseti Waterfall.
