A museum inside the Georgian National Museum building, dedicated to the Soviet period, repressions, and the country’s struggle for independence in 1921–1991.
The Museum of Soviet Occupation is located in the Georgian National Museum building on Rustaveli Avenue. The museum building itself was built in 1929 to a design by architect Nikolai Severov and is considered one of the most recognizable public buildings in central Tbilisi.
The museum opened in 2006 and is dedicated to the period of Soviet rule in Georgia from 1921 to 1991. The exhibition chronicles events following the Red Army’s entry into Tbilisi, political repressions, the 1924 anti-Soviet uprising, the operations of Soviet security services, and Georgian society’s struggle for independence.
The exhibition displays archival documents, photographs, personal belongings of the repressed, materials from KGB archives, and other authentic testimonies of the era. Today the Museum of Soviet Occupation is considered one of Tbilisi's most important historical exhibitions, fostering a deeper understanding of 20th-century events and Georgia's journey toward regaining independence.
