Monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali

An equestrian monument to the legendary founder of Tbilisi, erected on the Metekhi cliff above the historic city center.

The Monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali is one of the main symbols of Tbilisi and one of the most recognizable sculptures in the city. The bronze equestrian statue was erected on the Metekhi cliff above the Mtkvari River in 1967, designed by sculptor Elguja Amashukeli. The figure of the king faces toward the old town, and thanks to its elevated position, the monument is clearly visible from different parts of the historic center.

Vakhtang Gorgasali is considered the founder of Tbilisi and one of the most prominent rulers in Georgian history. According to legend, it was during a royal hunt that he discovered hot sulfur springs, around which the city subsequently grew. Under him, the capital was transferred from Mtskheta to Tbilisi, which spurred trade development and strengthened the state. The nickname "Gorgasali," which translates as "wolf's head," is linked to his famous battle helmet adorned with a depiction of a wolf. Vakhtang became renowned as a talented commander, fortress builder, and reformer who achieved greater national independence and bolstered the standing of the Georgian Church. It was during his reign that Narikala's fortifications were expanded and the development of Tbilisi as Georgia's future capital commenced.

Sculptor Elguja Amashukeli employed an unusual bronze-working technique: the monument's surface is covered with expressive textured relief lines, giving the figure an especially powerful and dynamic appearance. The height of the monument together with the pedestal exceeds twelve meters. After dark, the monument is illuminated and remains one of Old Tbilisi's most prominent landmarks, while the surrounding terrace is open to visitors around the clock.
