Shuamta Lakes

Shuamta Lakes is a remarkable natural complex located high in the mountains of Adjara. There are five alpine lakes here: three medium-sized and two smaller ones. They are located at an altitude of 2150 meters above sea level, nestled among the green meadows of the summer village of Shuamta. These places are shrouded in ancient legends and often covered with mystical fog, creating an atmosphere of seclusion. From here, splendid views open up to Khikhani Fortress, which towers over the valley.

You can reach the Shuamta Lakes in several ways. The primary trail is the Chirukhi -> Shuamta route, about 92 km long from Batumi. It passes through mountain pastures and alpine fields. If you are near the villages, walking from the village of Beshumi to the lakes takes about an hour, and from the village of Shuamta: 30 minutes. From the village of Khikhadziri, which is about 116 km from Batumi, you can drive an off-road vehicle or walk about 6 km (this will take about 2 hours). Locals also offer horse or jeep rentals; renting a vehicle costs about 50-70 Georgian GEL.

The best time to visit the lakes is from June to September. Dry weather prevails during this period, and visibility is better. On a clear day, the lakes sparkle, and after 16:00–17:00 fog often rolls into the valley, creating an ideal moment for camping and relaxing in nature.
