Beit Rachel Synagogue is an early 20th-century Ashkenazi synagogue tucked deep into the courtyards of Old Tbilisi, serving today as an intimate spiritual and cultural center for the Jewish community.
Beit Rachel Synagogue, located in Tbilisi, is an important spiritual and community hub for the city's Jewish community. This historic two-story building of an Ashkenazi synagogue was constructed in the early 20th century, during the 1910s. Heavily damaged during the 1991 earthquake, it stood in ruins for a long time until being meticulously restored. The synagogue received its current name "Beit Rachel" on September 15, 2009, when it reopened its doors after comprehensive restoration. The interior space is arranged in full compliance with religious canons, creating the atmosphere of seclusion and solemnity essential for prayer and Torah study.
Besides religious services, Beit Rachel serves as a cultural and educational center. Community celebrations, educational programs, and charitable events aimed at preserving Jewish traditions in Georgia are held here. It is a vibrant space where generations meet to maintain ties with their history and culture in a spirit of openness and hospitality.
The architecture of the synagogue combines classical elements and modern functionality. Inside the building is a spacious prayer hall with a beautiful Torah ark (Aron Kodesh) and a traditional bimah in the center. The walls and vaults are decorated with traditional Jewish ornaments and quotations from sacred texts. There is also a library with religious literature, classrooms for studying Hebrew and traditions, as well as a mikveh, a ritual bath built in strict accordance with halakhic standards.
