Sioni Square, known as "Sofiko Chiaureli Garden", is a lively green retreat in central Tbilisi where a monument to the great actress stands alongside views of the historic belfries of Sioni Cathedral.
Sioni Square is a small green area in the historic center of Tbilisi. It is situated right across the street from Sioni Cathedral, whose grounds feature their own courtyard enclosed by a stone wall. The square is literally nestled between Sioni St and one of Old Town's busiest arteries: Kote Abkhazi St. Consequently, the dynamic pulse of the Georgian capital is always felt here, where crowd chatter and traffic hum blend with rustling leaves. Nevertheless, well-tended paths and benches offer city residents and visitors a fine opportunity to relax in the shade of trees.
The main attraction and compositional center of this place is the bronze monument to the great Georgian actress Sophiko Chiaureli, erected in 2009 (the work of sculptor Levan Vardosanidze). It is thanks to it that among people and in many guidebooks this square is popularly called 'Sophiko Chiaureli Garden'. From here open beautiful views of old residential houses with carved balconies and architectural monuments of different eras. For example, directly opposite the square rises the second bell tower of Sioni, built in the 19th century in the Russian Classicism style. Locals playing chess can often be met here, lending the place a special, vibrant Tbilisi ambiance.
Walking through Sioni Square allows for a convenient descent to the Mtkvari embankment. This is an ideal location for a brief pause where the tolling of church bells and the surrounding urban bustle turn an ordinary rest into a true immersion in the history and daily life of Tbilisi.
