Lamplighter Sculpture

The "Lamplighter" sculpture is a functioning 3-meter monument portraying a Tiflis lamplighter in traditional Persian attire, whose bronze lantern truly illuminates Baratashvili Avenue every night.

The "Lamplighter" sculpture is one of the most poignant monuments of Old Tbilisi, honoring a vanished yet once indispensable profession. The bronze monumental figure is installed on Nikoloz Baratashvili Avenue. The monument portrays a man standing on the ground, gently holding a ladder and his work tool, a lantern, preparing to bring light to the evening city.

The author of this work is the famous Georgian sculptor Irakli Tsuladze. The image he created is composite. It is dedicated to all representatives of the lamplighter profession, which sank into oblivion following the city's electrification in 1927. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, street lamps ran on oil or kerosene, and every morning and evening these men made the rounds of their sectors so the city would not plunge into darkness. The sculpture conveys the quiet selflessness of their labor: the hero's face is focused, symbolizing the hope and coziness of old Tiflis.

The height of the monument is 3.3 meters, but the absence of a high pedestal allows passersby to examine surprising historical details. The fact is that in old Tiflis, street lamps were lit mainly by Persians. The sculptor reflected this fact with historical authenticity: the bronze lamplighter is dressed in traditional Persian attire, a characteristic cap adorns his head, and on his feet are slippers with upturned toes.

The sculpture is organically woven into the architectural fabric of the avenue. With nightfall, genuine magic happens here: the monument is "functional", and the lantern in the bronze giant's hands truly glows in the dark, as if the character had just kindled it with his flint.

"The Lamplighter" remains one of the most popular photo spots in the historic center. Tourists often linger by the sculpture to touch the bronze details "for good luck," which has polished the ladder and clothing elements to a shine. This place serves as a wonderful reminder of the romantic era when street lighting depended not on automation, but on the caring hands of a specific person.
