A historic church perched on the rocky slope of the Sololaki Ridge with sweeping vistas over old Tbilisi.
Zemo Betlemi, or Upper Bethlehem Church, is located on the slope of the Sololaki Ridge below Narikala Fortress. The church towers above the historic Kldisubani district and is easily recognized by its tall conical dome and brick facade. The church acquired its modern appearance following an 1884 reconstruction, although its history spans several centuries.
According to tradition, the first church on this site was founded back during the reign of King Vakhtang Gorgasali. The church received its name thanks to a relic brought from Bethlehem. According to legend, the Armenian priest Ter-Grigor brought soil from Bethlehem to Tbilisi, which was placed in the foundation of the church. Over many centuries Zemo Betlemi remained an Armenian church, and in 1994 it was transferred to the Georgian Orthodox Church and reconsecrated.
Today the church remains an active house of worship. Inside, one can see traditional Orthodox furnishings, icons, and candles, while the surrounding grounds offer beautiful views of old Tbilisi.
