Batumi State Conservatory Named After Z. Paliashvili

A center of musical education and culture in Batumi, an educational branch of the Pedagogical University. Concerts and master classes take place at the center.

Batumi Zakaria Paliashvili State Conservatory is the leading center of higher musical education and art in the region. Located in an elegant historic building at 20 Dimitri Tavdadebuli Street, it bears the name of the patriarch of Georgian classical music, and this is no coincidence. Zakaria Paliashvili (1871-1933) was a great composer considered the founder of Georgian national opera, having created such masterpieces as "Abesalom and Eteri" and "Daisi." Furthermore, melodies from his operas formed the basis of Georgia's modern national anthem, "Tavisupleba," forever inscribing his name in the country's history.

The history of the conservatory is inextricably linked with long-standing traditions of musical education in the city. The status of a conservatory (institute) was officially granted in 1998; however, it was established on the foundation of the Batumi State Music College, which also bore the name of Paliashvili and had trained professional musicians for decades. Thus, the founding of the conservatory became a logical step forward, elevating musical education in Adjara to a university level while preserving accumulated experience and the teaching faculty.

The conservatory building is an architectural landmark in its own right. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it represents a fine example of classical architecture with an elegant facade adorned with columns and stucco work. The austere yet stately aesthetics of the building perfectly suit its purpose. Inside are located not only classrooms and rehearsal spaces, but also a splendid concert hall with excellent acoustics, which serves as the main stage for students and guest artists.

Today the conservatoire conducts active educational and creative endeavors. It trains specialists in a wide range of disciplines, including piano, orchestral string and wind instruments, classical vocal performance, conducting, and musicology. Student concerts, recital performances, international competitions, and festivals, as well as master classes from prominent musicians, regularly take place within the walls of the conservatoire. This makes it a living, breathing entity that preserves the great heritage of the past and trains a new generation of talent.
