One of the oldest theatres in Georgia.
Although theatrical traditions in Batumi originated back in the 1870s, the theater's official chronology begins in 1937, when a permanent troupe was formed from graduates of the Adjara studio of the Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli Theater. Relocating to its present monumental building in 1952, the theater was named in 1959 after the great Georgian writer and public figure Ilia Chavchavadze.
Today the renovated theater appears in all its splendor: the interiors are adorned with exquisite ornamentation and paintings on walls and ceilings that retain historical details, while the stage is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The 480-seat auditorium has become more comfortable and accessible for people with disabilities. The theater's repertoire is diverse, featuring not only dramatic plays (predominantly in Georgian), but also symphony orchestra performances, operettas, and ballet. Inside there is also a small museum named after Gaioz Gogiberidze, housing artifacts that reflect the theater's rich history.
