Snow-white gallery decorating Batumi Boulevard.
The colonnade is one of the most recognizable and elegant architectural pearls of Batumi. This snow-white structure, made in the style of ancient Greek architecture, has become a real calling card of the city, which attracts tourists and locals with its beauty and historical significance.
The idea of creating a colonnade was born thanks to the Batumi doctor Ivane Mchedlidze, who, according to one version, with the assistance of Maxim Gorky, brought the project from the Italian city of Sorrento in the 1930s. The construction work, completed, as the mosaic inscription says, in 1934, was carried out under the supervision of the city's chief architect Pavle Nadareishvili and was carried out by the honored architect Bogdan Kirakosyano. Initially, the colonnade served as a sea gate, marking the entrance to the beach. However, over time, the coastline retreated, freeing up space for the expansion of the picturesque Seaside Park.
Carefully restored in 2023, the Colonnade continues to amaze with its pristine beauty. It is one of the most photographed places in Batumi. A walk under its arches allows you to feel the spirit of the times and imagine what the boulevard looked like in the middle of the last century. It is worth noting that this colonnade has "twin brothers" - the second colonnade, made in the same style, decorates the entrance to the 6th of May Park, creating a harmonious architectural unity in the city.
