A 12th-13th century medieval fortress in the town of Akhaltsikhe, a restored historical and cultural complex featuring a mosque, palace, museum, watchtowers, and valley views.
Rabati Castle is the main historical symbol and tourism center of the town of Akhaltsikhe, situated in Georgia’s southern region of Samtskhe-Javakheti. This monumental complex, sprawling over seven hectares on the rocky bank of the Potskhovi River, boasts a centuries-old and multicultural history. Founded in the 9th century by Georgian princes of the Jaqeli house, it was originally called "Akhaltsikhe", meaning "New Fortress". It acquired its current name "Rabati", meaning "fortified place", during the Ottoman Empire era, under whose rule it remained for several centuries.
In 2011-2012, the fortress underwent a large-scale, comprehensive reconstruction that turned the semi-dilapidated walls into an impressive cultural and tourist complex. The primary concept of the project was the creation of a "city within a city" reflecting the region's rich multicultural past. The most vivid symbol of this vision is the coexistence of the fortress's main architectural centerpieces: the restored Akhmediye Mosque with its gilded dome and the newly built Orthodox church.
The grounds of the complex are clearly demarcated into two principal zones. The lower, contemporary area is accessible to all visitors free of charge. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, gift shops, and wine stores are situated here. The upper tier represents the historical citadel core, accessible by ticket. Here stand the prime sights: the ancestral castle of the Jakeli princes, the citadel, the famed Ahmediye Mosque, and the Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum, whose exhibition introduces the region's rich past.
To visit Rabati Castle, you should allocate at least 2-3 hours. The complex is open to guests daily from 09:00 to 22:00, although the Historical Museum located on its grounds operates on shorter hours and closes at 19:00. A mandatory item on every tourist's program is climbing the main tower of the citadel, which offers the best panoramic view of the entire complex, the town of Akhaltsikhe, and its picturesque surroundings.
