Monument to Memed Abashidze

A monument dedicated to the outstanding Georgian writer and public figure of the early 20th century.

In the park adjacent to the central square of Europe in Batumi, there is a monument to Memed Abashidze, an outstanding Georgian politician, writer and philanthropist. This monument is a tribute to a man whose name is inextricably linked with the history of Adjara and its formation as an autonomous republic within Georgia.

Memed Abashidze (1873-1937) was a key figure in the Georgian Muslim community and an active supporter of the region's pro-Georgian orientation, especially during the turbulent times of the early 20th century. Abashidze contributed greatly to the development of Georgian culture. He translated works from Arabic, Persian, and Turkish into Georgian, and wrote a Georgian language textbook for Arabic-speaking students. He also wrote plays that were staged at the Batumi Drama Theatre.

The monument serves as a reminder not only of his significant achievements in shaping national identity and supporting education, but also of his tragic fate – Memed Abashidze became a victim of Stalin’s repressions in 1937. The monument symbolizes the gratitude of his descendants and the importance of preserving the historical memory and cultural heritage of Adjara.
