Sulfur Baths

Sulfur Baths is a historic complex in the Abanotubani district, built on natural hydrogen sulfide springs that gave Georgia's capital its name and became a symbol of its hospitality and wellness traditions.

Sulfur Baths is a legendary complex in Tbilisi's oldest district, Abanotubani, which represents the true cradle of the city. According to legend, it was right here that King Vakhtang Gorgasali discovered hot springs during a hunt, leading to the foundation of the capital. The name "Tbilisi" itself originates from the Old Georgian word "tbili" (warm) and literally translates as "warm place" or "warm springs". Historically, these baths are referred to as sulfur baths, although strictly speaking they are built atop natural hydrogen sulfide springs. Most baths in the complex are built into the earth and are easily recognized by the characteristic brick domed hemispheres rising on the surface, which provide natural lighting and ventilation for the chambers concealed below.

Inside, visitors are greeted by stone halls with pools filled with healing water, the temperature of which is around 37-40 degrees year-round. Against the background of the domed structures, the complex's main architectural exception vividly stands out: the Orbeliani (Chreli, or Blue) Baths. Unlike the others, it rises above the ground: its high lancet facade is tiled with exquisite oriental tiles, and minaret turrets are located on the sides, making the building externally resemble a Persian madrasa. Visiting the baths is traditionally accompanied by intensive exfoliation with a special hard mitten called 'kisa' (or 'kese') and a soap-foam massage. This procedure has been practiced for centuries by local bathhouse masters, who in Georgia are called mekise.

Today Abanotubani remains not just a tourist attraction, but also an important place of relaxation for Tbilisi residents themselves. The area around the baths has turned into a cozy walking zone overlooking Leghvtakhevi gorge and waterfall, where history meets modernity. The sulfur baths are a must-visit itinerary stop for anyone wishing to experience the authentic spirit of old Tiflis and feel firsthand the magic of its "warm waters".
