Statue of Medea

A majestic monument on Europe Square, symbolizing Georgian mythology and connection with ancient history.

The majestic statue of Medea stands tall on Europe Square. This tall bronze figure on a narrow white pedestal was unveiled in July 2007 and is the work of Georgian architect David Khmaladze. The statue depicts Medea, the legendary Colchian princess from ancient Greek mythology, whose country is believed to have been located in what is now Adjara.

Medea holds the Golden Fleece in her outstretched hand – a symbol of the greatness, wealth and prosperity of ancient Colchis. The fleece itself is covered with shining gold leaf, brightly glittering in the sun. Medea’s gaze is directed towards the sea, where, according to myth, thousands of years ago the ship Argo with Jason and the Argonauts landed on the shores of Colchis. Medea, having fallen in love with Jason, helped him take possession of the Golden Fleece, betraying her homeland and fleeing with it to Greece. This dramatic story of love and betrayal, described in myths, has found its embodiment in this monument, and fragments of the myth and an image of the ship Argo can be seen on the pedestal itself.

The statue of Medea symbolizes not only ancient myths and the rich past of the region, but also Georgia’s connection with the European world. The tall figure of the princess is visible from afar, dominating the square. At night, the monument and the surrounding buildings are beautifully illuminated, creating a special atmosphere in Europe Square, which is a popular meeting place and venue for city events.
