Khareba Wine Tunnel in Kvareli

A unique 7.7 km wine storage tunnel deep in the bedrock of the Caucasus Range, maintaining a year-round temperature of +12-14°C, boasting elite cellars and a cliffside restaurant.

The wine tunnel of Winery Khareba in Kvareli (Georgian "Gvirabi") is a unique engineering structure and one of the largest winemaking attractions not only in Georgia, but worldwide. The complex is located at the foot of the majestic Caucasus Range on the edge of the town of Kvareli, within the microzone of the famed naturally semi-sweet Kindzmarauli wine. The tunnel is an extensive network of underground galleries with a total length of 7.7 kilometers, cut entirely into the solid rock of Mount Kavkasioni.

Today Winery Khareba has turned the historic tunnel into a first-rate, world-class tourist destination. A well-appointed section of underground galleries about a kilometer long is open for tours, styled in the spirit of antique wine cellars with brick vaults, soft warm lighting, and endless rows of French and Caucasian oak barrels. Tens of thousands of bottles of vintage wines are stored along the tunnel, while tasting halls are arranged deep within the rock where guests can sample renowned wines: Saperavi, Mukuzani, Kindzmarauli, Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, and rare amber wines from qvevri.

Beyond wine tastings, guests at the complex can immerse themselves in living Kakhetian gastronomic traditions: participate in masterclasses on baking Georgian shoti bread in a blazing tone oven, making churchkhela from tatara grape juice, and distilling fragrant homemade chacha. At the top of the cliff, directly above the wine tunnel, sits the Saperavi scenic Georgian restaurant, reached by an express elevator straight from the underground galleries. From the restaurant's open terrace, a panorama of the Alazani Valley, the Duruji River, and vineyard estates unfolds.
