Kaviani Fortress

Kaviani Fortress is a historical fortification located in Adjara, in the village of Khichauri, Keda municipality, on the Kaviani hill at the confluence of the Chvanistskali and Adjaristskali rivers. The fortress consists of two parts: the first, presumably three-story, included rooms for various purposes, as evidenced by the surviving recesses and two windows cut into the wall. A rectangular pit plastered with lime has also been preserved in this part.

The second part of the fortress includes a well-preserved three-story tower of irregular rectangular shape with windows. The western wall of the fortress courtyard is 7.1 meters long and 5 meters high and is also relatively well preserved. The fortress is built of broken stone using cobblestones in the masonry.

Archaeological excavations, which began in the 1930s and continue to this day, show that the fortress had great strategic importance and was the residence of local rulers. Today, Kaviani is a picturesque and mysterious place where you can walk along the ancient walls, enjoy panoramic views of the mountains and rivers, and feel the atmosphere of history and architectural mastery of medieval Adjara.
