Metekhi Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Metekhi Church is one of Old Tbilisi's foremost hallmarks, situated atop a soaring rocky cliff over the Mtkvari River. The current building was erected in the 13th century during the reign of King Demetre II, although the site's history commenced significantly earlier. According to one account, a residence of Georgian monarchs once stood here, with the church forming part of an expansive royal palace complex. Owing to its commanding position, Metekhi played a prominent role in the religious, political, and defensive life of the city for centuries.

Over its history, the church was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. It survived invasions by Khazars and Mongols, and was used as a fortress, gunpowder magazine, barracks, and even a prison. In Soviet times, Metekhi was nearly demolished, yet thanks to the efforts of Georgian cultural figures, the holy site was preserved. Inside the church lies the tomb of Saint Shushanik, one of the most revered Christian martyrs in Georgia.

Today Metekhi is an active Orthodox church. Inside, visitors are greeted by an austere, minimalist interior featuring stone walls, ancient icons, candles, and traditional Georgian frescoes. The terrace in front of the church opens up some of the most famous panoramas of Tbilisi: from here you can see the Mtkvari River, Narikala Fortress, Rike Park, and the city's old quarters. Thanks to its location and rich history, Metekhi remains one of the most visited sights in the Georgian capital.
