A historic house with multicolored stained-glass windows, thanks to which its famous entryway received the name "Kaleidoscope"
The Kaleidoscope Stained-Glass House is one of the most famous residential buildings of old Tbilisi. The building was constructed in the 19th century and stands out for its carved wooden balconies, brick facade, and unusual entrance hall that brought it worldwide renown. From the street, the house looks quite modest, yet right here is located one of the city’s most recognizable historical interiors.
The main feature of the house is large stained-glass windows made of colored glass. In sunny weather, light rays pass through red, blue, green, and yellow glass inserts, creating bright colored patterns inside. Thanks to this play of light, the entrance hall was nicknamed 'Kaleidoscope'. In the 19th century, such stained glass was considered a sign of prosperity and refined taste, as colored glass was imported from Europe and cost very dearly.
Beyond their decorative function, the stained-glass windows protected the staircase from wind, rain, and dust. Original 19th-century wooden structures are still preserved inside, which is a great rarity for Old Tbilisi. Today the entrance hall is closed for general public visits, but the building remains one of the most famous landmarks of the historic center, regularly appearing in photos, postcards, and tourist routes across the city.
