A historic fortification from the 18th century, named after the local ruler Mamuka Tavdgiridze, which preserves legends about the stern ruler and his repentance.
Mamuka Fortress is a little-known but very atmospheric historical landmark in Adjara, located in the village of Alambari in the Kobuleti municipality, on the picturesque mountain Tsikhiskeli ("the throat of the fortress"). Built in the 18th century by order of Mamuka Tavdgiridze, the fortress received the name of its owner and became part of the history of this region. In former times, the village of Alambari served as one of the residences of the Gurian rulers, which gave this place special significance.
Today, the fortress is heavily damaged: in 1959, it was damaged by an earthquake, and only the southeastern wall, about three meters high, and the ruins of a tower with an area of 47 square meters have survived to this day. Despite the destruction, the ruins of Mamuka impress with their ancient atmosphere and offer beautiful views of the surrounding hills and forests.
